Detail Design and Fabrication (DD&F) has been busy designing and fabricating exhibit and trade show booths all summer. The favorite one so far among the designers was the booth created for Barrett Jackson, the Scottsdale-based collector car auction company, for their new line of signature car care products. For this project the design team decided to go big, creating a booth that displayed the new product line in a fun and exciting way.

The project began with brainstorming sessions with our client and designers to review their current packaging and decide what elements needed to be in the final design. Renderings were created of a cash register desk, product display kiosk, and a jumbo product display in the form of larger than life bottles. Once the designs were approved, DD&F began the fabrication process, first with the creation of the molded plastic jumbo product bottles. Each bottle was created to look identical to the product bottles themselves, complete with printed labels. In addition to the bottles, DD&F fabricated a cash register desk and a product display kiosk that incorporated car-themed graphics and the Barrett Jackson logo. Walls for the booth were also constructed and showcased the product with text and images. A variety of materials were used to build the booth and bright colors inspired by the product packaging were applied to the make the booth stand-out. The booth made its debut on in June at Barrett Jackson’s Orange County Auto Auction, and it will also be traveling to Las Vegas this fall for the next auto auction.

Check out the video to see the project go from concept to creation.

Among DD&F’s impressive array of work at Chase Field, there is one contribution DD&F has made to the ballpark that is destined to be the most beloved: The Sandlot. DD&F can proudly take credit for working from the conceptual layout, to design and build-out of a dynamic interactive play area for young fans, including Future’s Field. Complete with baseball diamond and windows in its outfield that open and close using computer automation, this miniature version of Chase Field gives aspiring ball players a chance to see what it feels like to hit one out of the park themselves.

DD&F implemented environmental graphics, a distinct entry statement and custom picket fence border, to infuse the area with a sense of continuity and kid-friendly atmosphere. DD&F also created valuable sponsorship opportunities throughout The Sandlot, which features a full playground and toddler play area and is joined by a variety of other kid-friendly attractions such as a stage for D-backs mascot, Baxter the Bobcat. Located on the third level, overlooking left field, The Sandlot was developed for partner St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. Through DD&F efforts, the play area was ready in time for its 2008 unveiling.

This year, DD&F helped update Baxter the Bobcat’s clubhouse by incorporating some new and fun elements into the photo opportunity and stage area. DD&F designed a new facade for the existing stage taking young fans away from the ballpark to Baxter’s porch. Complete with a refrigerator of snacks, a scratching post, and D-Backs branding, young fans can now visit Baxter in an exciting new space. We especially like the white paw prints that cover the roof!

DD&F loves creating interactive children’s environments that take a young fan’s experience from an ordinary trip to the ballpark to a magical and memorable day with their favorite team.

Check out some of the videos of these cool creations in the making. http://www.youtube.com/user/DDandF

PHOENIX (May 21, 2010) – Children and adults alike will soon have the opportunity to experience the brand-new, interactive learning environment, Solarville in the APS Solar Gallery, which will debut at the Arizona Science Center on Sunday, May 23. Solarville is an interactive learning environment demonstrating sun, wind, and algae as alternative energy sources. Sponsored by APS, the original concepts for Solarville were designed by local creative firm, Campbell Fisher Design (CFD) and the project was fabricated by Detail Design and Fabrication (DD&F.)

CFD’s creative direction was centered on taking a trip through a town called Solarville, an eco-friendly environment located in the APS Solar Gallery on Level 4. Guests stroll down Main Street, pass a transit station, industrial park, retail store, school, recreational area and a home while learning how solar and other renewable energy sources can be utilized in their daily lives.

“We were awarded the opportunity to transform a dark and non-traditional educational space into a bright and energetic learning experience that is not only fun and engaging, but teaches kids and adults about renewable energy and conservation,” said Greg Fisher, owner of Campbell Fisher Design.

DD&F worked closely with CFD, further enhancing the creativity of the project and bringing the exhibit to life. The colorful hallway is approximately 1800 square foot, 10 feet wide x 180 feet long and consists of 22 interactive kiosks and exhibits. Although DD&F remodeled or updated some of the exhibits, others were completely brand new concepts.

The exhibits and interactive elements that DD&F fabricated range from scientific labs that study the sun, interactive learning kiosks, as well as ways to show how we can harness and distribute sustainable green energy – from algae, to alternative fuels, to poop! Other exhibits allow participants to create power, such as the “Pedal Power” exhibit where bikes were designed to show human power and the efficiency difference of LED vs. CFL vs. incandescent lighting.

In addition to the interactive elements, DD&F also fabricated and installed the gallery signage, imaging and ceiling treatments in-house. Vertical wall extensions were accomplished by using full-color digitally printed banners. The additional 10 feet of printed graphic extended the overall height to 20 feet. Design elements such as stretch canvas triangles were used as a ceiling treatment to bring the space together.

“We were honored to team up with CFD to fabricate this exhibit for APS and Arizona Science Center,” said Shad Bruce, owner of DD&F. “We have enjoyed working with the Arizona Science Center on a variety of different exhibits and projects the past few years and Solarville was a very stimulating and challenging adventure. DD&F was able to take part in a very large science project, and we are all very pleased with the outcome of Solarville.”

ABOUT DD&F

Children’s Museum of Phoenix Unveils Interactive Transportation-Themed Exhibit

Local design and fabrication studio brings kid-friendly workshop to life with countless moving pieces.

Tempe, Ariz. (June 25, 2008) – Detail Design and Fabrication, Inc. ( DD&F ), a local creative fabrication studio teamed up with the Children’s Museum of Phoenix to mastermind and install a highly interactive transportation-themed exhibit to capture the imagination and provide a variety of hands-on activities for curious youngsters. Located in the historic Monroe schoolhouse in downtown Phoenix, the museum opened to the public this month and caters to children up to age 10. “After scoring great feedback on the children’s themed environment we designed and installed at Chase Field last month, we wanted to ‘one up’ ourselves,” said Shad Bruce, president of DD&F. “This project
has stretched the imagination of an already clever and creative team. It absolutely makes you want to be a kid again.”

Ideas began flowing 14 months ago when DD&F was challenged to design, fabricate and implement the transportation-themed workshop for young children. The workshop features a three-level mezzanine with race tracks stemming from each level, a sprint car with moving engine parts that kids can touch and adjust, a vintage motorcycle with a removable tire, as well as various musical instruments made from real reclaimed car and shop parts. Kids will also be able to ride through the trike wash, which emulates an actual car wash with rotating and moving parts that resemble water hoses, brushes and air-dryers. Parents can kick back and relax on a full-size Chevy truck bed cut down, re-framed and repainted. “I remember, as a kid hanging out with my dad, being absolutely mesmerized by everything from sprockets, gaskets to engines. I think it’s safe to say most kids love cars. This is more than 1,200 square feet of kid-friendly interactive bliss,” said Bruce.

Our Master of Disaster (Shad Bruce) in action, testing this hand crank xylophone designed and created by DD&F as the prototype for Children’s Museum of Phoenix. This was a beginning of an amazing project and led us to many more ideas for the “Pit Stop”.

Westcor Benefits from DD&F’s Ability to Craft Efficient, Highly Visible Spaces
With more than 18 million square feet of retail space and a reputation for forward-thinking development, Westcor is unquestionably a leader in its industry here in Arizona.

When the company needed the customer service areas at some of its largest malls revamped, Detail Design and Fabrication, Inc. ( DD&F ) devised a plan to help them optimize these spaces while adding visibility.

At the Chandler Mall the biggest challenge was limited space. DD&F masterfully designed a solution to make the most out of the tight space. Taking pictures of the existing customer service booth, the team overlaid their proposed schematic of a new “efficiency” design.

At Paradise Valley Mall a similar project entailed additional challenges and considerations. First, the customer service kiosk was now to also house security. As an effort to enhance security at the mall, this new home base for security officers was intended to help guests and retailers more quickly and
easily enlist the help of an officer when needed.

While clearly beneficial, the challenge of this move was decreased space for customer service functions. DD&F tackled this concern, as well as others pertaining to this space, and the results not only represented a solution, they were truly innovative.

DD&F enhanced kiosk signage to meet both the demands of design and function while making these spaces more highly visible. The new, more intuitive design directs customers to the front of the deskwhere they can ask questions or purchase mall gift cards. This solved the issue of traffic flow, improving the customer experience and decreasing stress on customer service representatives. With the increased popularity of gift cards, more room is also dedicated to registers for check out.

Enhanced storage solutions were also integrated to reduce clutter and create greater ease in storing everything from gift cards and paperwork to strollers and wheel chairs. Shelving on the outside of the booth provides visibility for and easy access to brochures, maps and visitor guides.

Mall General Manager Jacob Garcia was thrilled. “We have struggled with how to best set up our customer service area for some time. DD&F brought fresh ideas and knew exactly how to deliver the best solution, from design to implementation. I can now say with confidence we make the most out of the space and better serve the needs of our
guests.”

A departure from the customer service realm, but also improving the customer experience, is a new “sampling” kiosk now located in one of the mall’s main thoroughfares. Also created by DD&F, the kiosk allows food and beverage vendors from the mall food court to attract guests by offering them a taste of what’s just down the corridor.
